Xiehe Education | Highlights from Sharing by CUGs

On the afternoon of May 18, the cross campus Counselors of University Guidance (CUG) conference was held successfully at Qingpu Campus. CUGs from Jiaoke Campus, Gubei Campus, Wanyuan Campus, Pudong Campus, Wuxi Campus, Qingpu Campus and Sanlin Campus, some Principals and representatives from School Management Department, Marketing Department and Strategy&Business Development Department of Center (Group) took part in it with the online participation of Xiamen ITG Campus. The representatives of each campus shared the information and data of university application for 2021 graduates, made the deep analysis and comparison on the country direction, university selection, major range, application success rate and other data for the overseas studying of high school graduates from each campus, exchanged and shared the difference of various auxiliary means and systems, and discussed the further plan of SUIS Alumni.

Diversified major selections:

More than 40 majors in five professional fields of engineering, science, business, liberal arts and art are included in the university offers. With the spread of global outbreak and the change of international situation, our students are undergoing the different stages of life. In our eyes, the students are pursuing for the international visions, inner values and hobbies, persistently applying for their beloved majors, and showing their original intentions in the dynamic world.

347 SUIS 2021 graduates have received the offers from almost a hundred countries and regions around the world. The students have paid close attention to the application for the popular universities in UK, USA and Canada as well as other countries and regions in Europe and Asia.

Multiple university offers per student：

The diversified courses and university admission channels from SUIS also provide more selection directions for students while respecting their own hobbies and interests. With four to five offers per student, everyone will have more opportunities to select their beloved universities and majors.

We are taking pride in the entry of SUIS students into Oxford, Cornell and other world top universities. However, based on this long offer list, many seemingly common graduates have finally applied for the admission into the world top universities of arts and sciences, art colleges and professional colleges or world top ranking majors by making full use of their own specialties and merits.

Wide coverage of scholarship:

The scholarship of SUIS students has covered physics, economics, design, photography, environmental research, computer music, performance and other majors in different universities. By May 2021, the scholarship of about RMB22,000,000 has been obtained in total.

QUESTION1——When is university guidance required?

Jiaoke – Before the students take BC programme, we have created the university archive for each student, and enabled the students to have a systematic understanding of learning plan for 3-4 years; The form tutor holds the concurrent post of CUG, and has an all-round understanding of students and their families.

Pudong – After the entry into IGCSE 1, each student can get his/her BridgeU University Guidance system account. CUG will assist the students in the comprehensive understanding of university information and the guidance of essay writing, perform the one-on-one guidance according to the personalized demands of students, and see it as their tasks to help the students to find out “the most suitable” universities.

QUESTION2——Does Counselor of University Guidance only play the role on the university guidance?

Wuxi – At WUIS, CUGs have 10 years of university guidance experience on average. They are devoted to inspiring the students to seek for their own interests and advantages, guiding them to plan their own school work, extracurricular activities and standardized examinations, and instructing the students to successfully receive the university admission notices through the university admission courses, IGCSE/IB course selection guidance, holding of university exhibition, one-on-one guidance of university application and so on.

Pudong Sanlin – In our opinion, CUG helps the students to apply for studying at the ideal universities; furthermore, this process should be regarded as another learning experience throughout the whole study careers of students in the high schools just like the study of any subject. On this basis, more SUIS graduates are expected to continuously reflect on and explore the real selves and make the most suitable choices.

QUESTION3——How does Counselor of University Guidance ensure the professionalism?

Jiaoke – A set of mature planning schemes have been formed by CUG of BC Programme in the work experience accumulation of more than 10 years. CUG team consisting of Chinese and expat teachers possesses the distinct work features: Except for the routine university admission (such as the resource connection of overseas universities, familiarity with the requirements of universities and application requirements), the long-term follow-up planning for the students is the most important, in which the Chinese and expat teachers should perform their duties and cooperate tacitly.

Wanyuan – Kuder Navigator is a scientific system tool to support our school counselors’ daily work. The result of the three assessments (Kuder Career Interests Assessments, Kuder Skills Confidence Assessment, and Super’s Work Values inventory-revision) provides more insight for counselors to know students better, it is also students’ discovery journey of self-concept. Besides, the teaching materials along with the assessments are systematically designed, so we can help students to interpret their results in a professional manner, the course content is also helpful for students to improve their career development awareness and ability. At the same time, the database of colleges and majors is also a reliable factor that students can refer to when selecting high school courses and making long-term study plans.

QUESTION4——How do the school, CUG, parents and students cooperate with each other in the university admission?

Qingpu – Currently, Pre-A and Grade 10 Programme are offered at the high school of Qingpu Campus. For Grade 10, we have opened the Cialfo system account for students and their parents to support the university admission, and instructed the students to complete “Do What You Are” (MBTI). Meanwhile, we have made the one-to-one university admission planning interview with the family of each student at Grade 10 , found out the university admission demands of students and their parents, and assisted them in making the preliminary university guidance planning. For Pre-A Grade, we have held the unified information session of university admission planning, invited all the parents and students to attend the information session, and introduced the focuses of application preparation for different countries for overseas study and the methods of time planning.

Xiamen ITG – The overseas university application is a complicated process with high requirements. Xiamen ITG Campus helps the students and their parents to understand the different university admission channels and selections by various means (such as the information session/university exhibition, university guidance course and multiple forms of conversation between the students/parents and the CUGs/Principals), gives the suggestions and assists the students in completing the application according to the actual situation of students (including their interests, academic and career objectives).

Summary:What are the main roles of CUGs in SUIS?

CUGs provide the university guidance services for the whole stage of high school based on the different characteristics of each student, from the complete university guidance course for the stage of high school, to the support for the students to clearly understand the universities, selves and future development direction, to the instruction for the students to complete the application essays, university interview information and university application system information, and to the close guidance in the foreign culture, customs, laws, emergency calling and others (including the constant attention and career and practical guiding). CUGs help the students to continuously exploit their own potentialities during the study and to recognize their own peculiarity and the different academic ability, specialty and future career planning of each student, and select the most suitable universities for the students while giving support to the psychological construction of students and their parents.
